Nightmare is a Frankenstein’s monster of an experience, like the chaotic lovechild of a haunted house-themed escape room, an interactive comedy show, and a quirky board game night.

Delivering an action-packed hour of chaos, adrenaline, absurdity and nonstop laughter, Nightmare offers immersive adventure unlike anything else at this year’s FRINGE WORLD Festival. From the moment we stepped into the cobweb-draped, ghoul-haunted room, we were transported to a world where the cult-classic 90s board game truly came alive. A flickering TV, a waiting game board, and an eerie atmosphere really set the stage for our adventure.

A friendly guide greeted us, walked us through the rules, and prepared us to face the formidable Gate Keeper, whose eerie presence, sharp-witted insults, and spontaneous challenges were delivered via video throughout the game. The rules were simple enough for newcomers to grasp, but the game’s relentless pace and the ever-visible countdown intensified the suspense, keeping us constantly on edge.

What began as whimsical fun quickly transformed into a fiercely competitive race against time, filled with unexpected twists, dramatic turns, and the Gate Keeper’s ever-dramatic interruptions. Fortunately, the private setting let us fully immerse ourselves in the experience, free from distractions or the judgmental eyes of onlookers! Shouts of victory, groans of defeat, and fits of uncontrollable laughter filled the room as we scrambled to complete tasks, recover from missteps, or revel in a lucky break.

The Gate Keeper’s unpredictable challenges, rewards and sharp-witted punishments added hilariously unexpected twists, keeping the energy and excitement at a constant high. The dynamic within our team played a big role in shaping the experience, making it clear that this is an event best shared with people who will embrace the chaos with you. Our group - a mix of first-timers and nostalgic fans - was fully engaged, bonding and laughing over the shared madness. We left the room exhilarated, grinning, and plotting a return visit.
