The tale of Dean Misdale’s spectacular evolution is the drag education we didn’t know we needed.
Characters such as Ursula and Frank-n-Furter helped contribute to the creation of Dean Misdale’s drag spirit and girrrrlll we are so glad they did.
Dean has perfected the art of drag with stylised movement, emotive facial expressions and they have the voice to completely knock it out of the park. Their vulnerability and charisma absolutely captivated the audience.
This backstage glimpse behind the fabulous wigs and spectacular costumes was heartfelt and told the formative tale of a young Perth person who was seeking to “find their tribe” in an age where role models were few and far between. Shout outs to crucial cultural cinematic pieces such as The Little Mermaid, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, The Birdcage, Hedwig and the Angry Inch and many more create a kaleidoscope of sheer, queer brilliance that made the audience tingle and tear up.
This journey takes Misdale from Perth to Sydney to performing with Adele (yes THE Adele) and the incredible opportunity that is starring in the powerhouse musical production “We Will Rock You”. Dean’s story is cleverly crafted and moving, their authenticity and bravery disarms and connects in a Spiegeltent teeming with people.
Misdale’s voice is powerful, emotive and completely carries the songs to where they need to go. Everyone was grooving, everyone was moving and if we had to choose between the hook or the ovation every person in that theatre would have been on their feet with applause.
This was so heartening to see, the generous and definitive outpouring of love and allyship from the audience was deeply moving.
