A girl has gotta be pretty lucky to enter The Rechabite and immediately have drag queens adopt her and hand over a cowboy hat. From the moment you see a sparkly lady strewn in a delicate pose across a table you know that YUMMY: Joy Machine is going to be a vibe.
The premise of the show was bringing joy to the people and Valerie Hex and their talented troop did just that. Valerie was stunning on stage, commanding the audience's attention and then delivering comedy gold when we gave it to her. Whether you’re looking for awe-inspiring jump splits, kinky trad-wives or just some free pretzels this show will not disappoint.
After the first segment, I heard an audience member involuntarily say “That is so good” with the kind of awe that only a great Fringe show can bring. There was a hula hoop goddess of love act that had to be seen to be believed. The pink cyclone of hula hoops that rivals Glinda the Good Witch’s travel by bubble.
Speaking of the Wizard of Oz… damn. I know that is not an articulate reviewer statement but I am forever changed by Milo’s performance as Dorothy, it was a combination of sexy burlesque mixed with saucy comedy and absolutely teeming with attitude. This performer is out of control good, their vocals were raw and powerful and they knocked everything they did out of the park.
Bonus points to the performer who rocked a kinky pretzel, to come out and ooze character during the blackout before your piece even starts was incredible, you are a star. I cannot even begin to explain how awe-inspiring the costuming was, if you want a shiny drop-dead gorgeous drag show with heels that someone had to have sold their soul to strut in, then this is it. The choreography was punchy and effective, these performers absolutely nailed it.
There was a vaudevillian-style magician with a chain kink, a songstress who somehow made Pink Pony Club even better, a Simpson’s parody that had me questioning everything I ever knew about Marge and endless hilarity. This show will get you pumped up and send you out into the night where more Fringe treasures and pleasures await…
