A little cheeky, a little experimental, this show is for those who like flitting around like a butterfly, tasting the sweet nectar of different flowers. The Cabaret Le Papillon brings onstage newcomers to the burlesque and cabaret scene, as well as established artists who are experimenting with new works. With a different curated line-up each night, you will not know what’s in store until you get there.

You start wondering what you have gotten yourself into, the moment Whisky A'More steps onstage and in between joking, teasing, telling stories and getting everyone to cheer like an FA (Fantastic Audience), she warns us not to steal any item of clothing flung in our direction. “I’ve been in the business for 10 years and I haven’t washed this corset since I started,” she said, in mock seriousness.

But before any regrets can set in, she starts reading out a little introduction of the first act. “I’m going to do this because they have taken the time to write it and I think they deserve to be heard”. It is a small gesture, but it demonstrates how supportive they try to be for their artists. In that moment, you know that it will be great fun.

And away we went, one act following the next. Some were awkward and others were sexy. There were plenty of nipple tassels and gloves being slowly removed. The most cheers went to the funny ones with a story, like the Bob the builder set-piece. Suffice to say, the audience would not be remembering their childhood hero the same way again when they hear “Yes we can!”

This was a show with a diversity of bodies, gender and energy, with lots of generosity and impudence mixed in. If you are looking for variety, this is for you. Just be an FA and you’ll be fine.
