Nicky Wilkinson: Fancy Pants
Nicky has discovered a few things about the ‘Lucky Country’ since she moved here – jellyfish stings hurt (especially on the boob), Aussies love a drink and it turns out her fiancé is a bit of a bogan. Still… anything is a step up from the cold grey Northeast of England and back home, they now think she’s a Fancy Pants, even while she’s sculling Bundy cans and eating pies. 2023 is Nicky’s 10th year as a Stand-Up Comedian. She’s gotten pretty good at it and has an impressive stage presence and a loveable witty charm - you won’t regret spending an hour in her company. “Bright, effervescent & pleasantly filthy” ★★★★½ The Advertiser
“Charming & charismatic” ★★★★ The Wee Review
“Relatable, down to earth humour” ★★★★ This is Radelaide
“Effortless likeability & excellent comic timing” Chortle
Cheeky and irrepressible, a very enjoyable show for young and old.
Nicky is relaxed and down to earth and gently endears herself to the audience but there is still a nice little bite to the humour.
Her comic timing is excellent as you’d expect from a comedian with her experience and the punchlines are delivered with such casual aplomb that they still made you laugh even on those (few) occasions when you could anticipate what was coming.
She’s from ‘Ull (Kingston upon Hull in East Yorkshire) and the way she tells it being here is quite a step up. Relatively new to Australia, Nicky still seems to be delighting in the novelty of the stuff we do and say in her adopted country.
Her stories take us through a few of her experiences including chavs v bogans, the bizarre priorities of border control and even some technical information about her uterus.
There’s a quirky soundtrack and also an entertaining quiz covering a few elements of Ocker culture - with a real prize.
Early on Nicky asked us all to write down an achievement (and seal it away for later), and then she proceeded to demonstrate one of her achievements – mastery of the spoons.
It’s a new show and a couple of the gags are still being honed but that’s ok as it gives the performance that bit of edgy unpredictability.
Why Fancy Pants? For most of the show I was sure it was the brightly coloured beach pants she was strolling around in. I was wrong. Stick with it – almost all is revealed in a titillating denouement.
So, just think of your favourite Aunty, the one you’d like to receive a big warm hug from, and then imagine her telling jokes. That’s Nicky Wilkinson.
