About this event

DURGA is the Holiest Goddess revered for combating the evil power within this earth. The play begins with the meditation pray by Mahisasura, the king of Asura for Bramha, creator of the Universe. His hard devotion succeeds, allowing him to visit Bramha. Mahisasura receives a Grant Blessing of power to keep him from dying at the hands of any Devas.

DURGA was created to slay the Buffalo Demon Mahishasura, by Bramha, Vishnu, Shiva and the lesser Gods who were otherwise powerless to overcome him. Embodying their collective energy (Shakti), she is both the derivative from the male divinities and the true source of their inner power.

She is also greater than any of them. Born fully grown and beautiful, DURGA presents a fierce menacing form to her enemies.

Presented by:
Dabali Theatre

Dabali Theatre was formed in 1994, marking an important turning point in Nepali theatre history. The proscenium theatre had not quite made its impact on the general public and no new forms had come into existence. At this time young theatre workers came up with a unique idea of stage and theatre. They chose the street and proscenium arch for their performances. Right at this juncture of the Nepali theatre history, Dabali Theatre emerged. From 1995 to 2001, Dabali Theatre trained theatre groups of Liwang (Rolpa District), Silgadhi (Doti District), Mangalsen (Achham District), Ilam (Ilam District), Damak (Jhapa District) and Dharan (Sunsari District) on Peoples' Theatre and theatre management, empowering local theatre groups and creating cultural sustainability.
