FRINGE WORLD Update: Reduced capacities

The Festival respects and trusts the government’s decision regarding restrictions to help keep our community safe.

The restrictions have however had an impact on the Festival, our venues and our artists. In particular, due to capacity restrictions some of our shows are oversold.

Over the weekend we announced a temporary process for this problem because we did not have the capacity to resolve the issue at such short notice. We thank you for your patience. We understand the frustration with a changing policy, but please be aware that we aim to strike a balance that does not critically impact our artists but allows our customers to continue to enjoy the Festival.

The refund/cancellation process is time-consuming and our team will work as fast as they can, however there may be delays. We have also requested that our artists notify us of cancelled sessions as soon as they can to ensure we can communicate any changes to patrons at a reasonable timeframe.

The new attendance process is as follows, and it relates to shows occurring in our final week of the Festival but prior to the restrictions lifting i.e. for sessions through Feb 8 to 13. The restrictions are set to lift for our final evening of shows on Sunday February 14, which means that those shows will not have oversold issues.

Attendance process for Feb 8 to 13: Back to normal....sort of

For Feb 8 to 13 we are returning to normal, whilst still honouring refunds for cancellations and valid or compassionate reasons.

The normal process is that if you do not receive an email or text from us to notify you that your ticket is cancelled, you can assume that your tickets are still valid. If you have not been contacted, please attend your session. Unless otherwise arranged, you will not receive a refund.

There are a few sessions that have been oversold.

Ticket holders who have purchased tickets to an oversold session will be reviewed in order of transaction date/time. Customers who purchased latest will be notified that their tickets have been cancelled and that they will receive a refund.

We encourage you to check your inbox, spam/junk folders to find out if your tickets have been cancelled. We will be processing most refunds after Monday afternoon.

Please note that given that there have already been some last-minute restrictions changes imposed on us, and some shows may decide at last minute that they need to cancel for another reason, you can assume that there may be further last-minute changes. As such, you are encouraged to check the event page on our website prior to attending to get the latest information.

What if I cannot attend my session?

If you cannot attend a show due to illness, because you were impacted by the Perth fires or because you live outside of Perth and cannot attend due to the travel restrictions, you can email us prior to the show start time and you will receive a refund.

Get tickets!

If you see a show with tickets available on our website, we encourage you to get them and support our artists. The Festival is a precious opportunity for our community, and we thank you for making the most of it.

COVID Safe information

FRINGE WORLD venues will feel a bit different due to the restrictions, but there will still be good food and drinks, good times and great entertainment.

Our COVID Safe plan has been re-approved by the Health Department with the following amendments.

At the two largest Hubs - The Woodside Pleasure Garden and Girls School - entry will be limited to ticket holders only (for a session occurring that day) for the duration 8 – 13 Feb. If capacity permits, patrons can enter anytime before their show for food/drink. Patrons then must  move to the venue zone 20minutes before your show. Patrons are able to enjoy the seated areas in The Woodside Pleasure Garden after their show, but unfortunately are not able stay at Girls School.

The site will be segmented into individual sections based on venue locations and food and beverage offerings so that the venue can meet the 4sqm restriction and still provide you with the refreshments and services you need. Access to these sections may not be at the Main Entry point. Please refer to staff instructions when arriving at each Hub site.

All patrons wishing to attend any FRINGE WORLD show/venue will be required to wear a mask. You will not be permitted entry to a Hub or venue without a mask.

Patrons will be required to check-in via the SafeWA App or manual contact register.

If you purchase food or drink at a venue you are required to remain seated while consuming this. Masks are to be worn until you are seated, and a common-sense approach will then be taken regarding the mask use whilst you are eating/drinking. Masks must be worn while watching a show, unless you are consuming a beverage.

Due to the nature of their work, FRINGE WORLD artists will not be required to wear a mask whilst performing, however they must wear a mask before and after their show.

Patrons and all personnel must adhere to physical distancing. Unfortunately, performers may not be able to join patrons for a photo following their show, so we request your understanding surrounding this situation.

Support artists

Given that a number of shows have been cancelled and/or have had to reduce their capacities and therefore income potential, our artists are feeling a huge financial strain. You can support them by donating to the Fringe Fund.

A huge thank you to the incredible people who have donated and supported our artists over the last week. So far over $57,000 has been raised through the Fringe Fund. Our artists are facing considerable losses and the more donations received, the more you can lessen the blow of the necessary lockdown and closures.

We take donations throughout the Festival through the Fringe Fund, with funds raised normally going to artists for Award grants and other artist support. Due to the impact of cancellations, we will be directing all Fringe Funds raised during the 2021 Festival to support the artists impacted by the lockdown and cancellations. Funds will be distributed fairly.

Donate to: FringeFund.org

Further ways you can support artists is here.

We would like to make special mention to some significant donations from the Ungar Family Foundation; Festival partner Woodside who has gone the extra mile to match employee donations; and Gage Roads Brew Co. who has topped up the Fringe Fund through sales from Hello Sunshine cider.

Although this has been a blow to this Festival, we are incredibly proud of the resilience, strength and empathy of our artists, staff, patrons and the rest of the FRINGE WORLD community. Get out there and make the most of your Fringe Festival!

Rooftop Movies

ARTRAGE, the presenter of FRINGE WORLD, also produces the outdoor cinema Rooftop Movies.

Rooftop Movies will be running at a reduced capacity of 150 from Saturday 6th February to Saturday 13th February. Ticket holders would have received an email on Friday 6th Feb afternoon. Please visit the Rooftop Movies website for more information

Frequently Asked Questions

You said that for shows on Friday 5 February that if we didn’t turn up we will get a refund. Is this still the case?

We will honour this for shows on Friday 5 February, however as it was a temporary measure it does not apply to shows held after 5 February.

What if I don’t want to attend my show? (can I get a refund)

Unfortunately, we do not refund tickers for change of mind or because you are not able to attend. This policy helps protect our artists from losing expected income at short notice.

If you cannot attend the show due to illness, because you were impacted by the Perth fires or because you live outside of Perth and cannot attend due to the travel restrictions, you can email us in advance and you may be eligible to receive a refund.

If you do not contact us prior to the show for one of the above reasons, you will not receive a refund. If possible, we urge you to consider foregoing a refund so that the artist receives the income.

What if my show is cancelled?

In some instances, shows may be cancelled. Ticket holders are encouraged to check the event page of their session on the FRINGE WORLD website before attending to see the latest update to their show.

We will endeavour to contact all ticket holders to cancelled sessions prior to the event and recommend ticket holders check their emails and junk folders for information relating to their cancelled session should this occur. If your show is cancelled you will receive a refund as per our purcahse terms

How soon will I know if my session has been oversold?

Our team is working hard to process changes for each session. We will prioritise sessions with earlier show dates and with a higher volume of patrons who will need to be contacts. We thank you for your patience in this process.

What if I have been affected by the Perth fire (can I get a refund)?

Our heart goes out to those affected by the Perth fires. Please email us as soon as you can, you may be eligible for a refund.

What if I can’t travel to Perth due to the restrictions?

Please email us as soon as you can, you may be eligible for a refund.

How will the show/performance be different in these restrictions?

Please refer to the copy above in the section titled COVID Safe Information.

How will venues be different in these restrictions?

Please refer to the copy above in the section titled COVID Safe Information.

Are Friends Skip the Line Passes still valid?

Unfortunately these cannot be used between 8-13 February.

How to re-book for a show that was cancelled.

Visit the website and see if the show has a session with tickets available and then purchase tickets.

The new restrictions means that most venues must cut their attendance in half, however many of our shows have not sold 50% of tickets to sessions so you will still be able to book tickets.

We encourage people to get out there and support the Fringe in our final week. There will be shows happening every night all over Perth.

The artists need to work, audiences need to enjoy shows and Perth needs the vitality of its Fringe to return. Let’s all do our part and make the most of FRINGE WORLD.

What will the bars and drink service be like at venues?

Please refer to the copy above in the section titled COVID Safe Information.

My show is in a nightclub. Do all events in nightclubs get cancelled?

Ticket holders are encouraged to check the event page of their session on the FRINGE WORLD website before attending to see the latest update to their show. If the event is cancelled it will list this on the website.

What about shows which involve dancing?

Please refer to the event page.

What if I have standing tickets at a venue? Will my ticket still be valid?

Please refer to the event page.

Will FRINGE WORLD be rescheduling shows that have had to cancel this week, or extending the festival dates by a few days in order to allow productions to be remounted?

We’re an open-access Festival, so it’s up to the venue and the artist to decide what is best for them. If they want to and are able to extend a show, then Artrage will continue to provide the ticketing service for them. We will be able to report more on this in the coming days.

Why can I not donate directly to the show that I had tickets to?

Prior to the lockdown, for shows that were cancelled due to COVID-19 (e.g. border closer) we were able to give customers the option to donate their ticket to the artist. Unfortunately this is a time-intensive process and due to the sheer volume of show cancellations that we now have we have implemented a system where refunds are processed as standard, however you are able to donate through the Fringe Fund to help support artists. This gives greater flexibility for you to decide how much you would like to donate and will also benefit all artists affected. We will be processing 24,000 ticket refunds between Sunday and Friday, so it is a large task.

We take donations throughout the Festival through the Fringe Fund, with funds raised normally going to artists for Award grants and other artist support. Due to the impact of cancellations this week, we will be directing all Fringe Funds raised during the 2021 Festival to support the artists impacted by this week’s lockdown. Funds will be distributed evenly to the artists.

When will I receive my refund?

We will aim to process refunds within 31 business days. We apologise that during this busy time we are not able to process these any quicker and we thank you for your patience.

What if I purchased my tickets with a Gift Voucher?

If the original payment method was a gift voucher or credit note, another voucher will be issued that can be used at FRINGE WORLD Festival 2022.

FRINGE WORLD Gift Vouchers are not redeemable for cash either in whole or part of the voucher value

What else can I do to help artists?

  • Follow, like, comment and share a Fringe artist on social media
  • Buy artist merchandise
  • Buy a ticket for a show in the final week of the Festival
  • Spread the word!

We’re currently in the process of collating information on other ways you can donate to artists.

If I do not wish to attend but do not wish to receive a refund and would like the money to be donated to the Fringe Fund for artists, do I need to do anything?

Tickets will not be refunded for non-attendance, so your ticket will remain with the artist. Tickets for cancelled shows will be refunded, if you would like to donate this to the Fringe Fund please let us know.

Who receives the box office income from ticket sales? Who is impacted when there is a refund?

FRINGE WORLD is an open-access Festival, which means that there are a variety of events and venues, and it is up to the artist and venue to decide whether they want to participate. Equally, there are a variety of different ticketing and contractual relationships between venues and events.

ARTRAGE (the presenter of FRINGE WORLD) also manages some of the venues in the Festival; the hubs of The Woodside Pleasure Garden and Girls School. All other venues are managed by other companies/organisations.

For the venues that ARTRAGE manages, all venue, technical, front-of-house and back-of-house support is supplied. No upfront or hire fee is associated with these services, but FRINGE WORLD takes 32% of each ticket sold to recoup some of these costs, which are subsidised heavily from other revenue streams. This means the risk is shared and the artist doesn’t have enormous upfront costs to cover before their season. Shared risk means that when a ticket is refunded, both the artist and ARTRAGE lose the income. ARTRAGE is applying to state government funding to support events in its venues who are impacted by lockdown and the subsequent capacity changes.

The box office deal for independent venues can variy from flat hire rates charged to artists, box office splits, or potentially providing their venue for free. As such, for these venues when a ticket is refunded the artist will lose the income and potentially also the venue will lose income.
